110 X 176cm Fine Antique Bokhara Nim Suzani

19th century
Description

A really outstanding example of the genre, in excellent condition. Extremely fine embroidery bustles and barges for space in this half size embroidery. Each red blossom is made up of two different reds, a blue red and an orange red, that are very similar tonally and when laid side by side, the effects are extraordinary- and beautiful. It adds so much depth and movement which is the hallmark of a great suzani. Ample use of green is very attractive too, with the vines whizzing and speeding around the small confines with dizzying velocity. It's a powerful little embroidery and I love it. A great display piece that will continually entertain you as you try to figure out what's going on- a never ending job.

Freshly cleaned and lined.

3'7" x 5'9"

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Bokhara Suzani is a traditional hand-embroidered decorative textile originating from the Bokhara region of Uzbekistan, characterised by intricate floral motifs, circular medallions, and vibrant silk thread embroidery on a woven base fabric.

Suzanis are typically constructed using narrow strips of hand-loomed cotton or linen ground fabric stitched together, decorated with silk embroidery thread applied via chain stitch or basma couch stitch using natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic historic suzanis feature visible seams where separately embroidered narrow panels are aligned and stitched together, subtle colour variations from natural plant dyes, and irregular hand-stitched details rather than uniform machine embroidery.

Interior designers frequently display suzanis as textile wall art mounted above beds or sideboards, drape them over upholstered sofas and armchairs, or frame them behind acrylic to introduce colour and pattern to contemporary spaces.

To preserve historic silk embroidery, display textiles away from direct sunlight and moisture, avoid hanging by raw tension without uniform mounting support, and consult a qualified textile conservator for specialized dry cleaning.
