A fine early Victorian gold and pink topaz brooch, circa 1840, designed as a sculptural two-tiered spray of flowers and foliage.
The brooch is centred upon three interlaced openwork gold loops and applied with finely modelled and textured leaves, flower buds and stems. Seven oval-cut pink topazes are set in closed-back settings, with traditional foil backing enhancing their attractive rose-pink colour.
Of particularly pleasing three-dimensional construction, the various floral elements are arranged at different heights, creating considerable depth and movement. The finely textured foliage and naturalistically modelled calyxes are characteristic of the romantic botanical jewellery fashionable during the early Victorian period.
The brooch is crafted in 15ct gold, unmarked but tested. The pin tests as 9ct gold and is fitted with a traditional C-clasp.
