Early Victorian 15ct Gold and Pink Foil-backed Topaz Floral Brooch, C.1840

19th century
Description

A fine early Victorian gold and pink topaz brooch, circa 1840, designed as a sculptural two-tiered spray of flowers and foliage.

The brooch is centred upon three interlaced openwork gold loops and applied with finely modelled and textured leaves, flower buds and stems. Seven oval-cut pink topazes are set in closed-back settings, with traditional foil backing enhancing their attractive rose-pink colour.

Of particularly pleasing three-dimensional construction, the various floral elements are arranged at different heights, creating considerable depth and movement. The finely textured foliage and naturalistically modelled calyxes are characteristic of the romantic botanical jewellery fashionable during the early Victorian period.

The brooch is crafted in 15ct gold, unmarked but tested. The pin tests as 9ct gold and is fitted with a traditional C-clasp.

Dimensions: 4.1 × 3.6 cm

Weight: 9.51 grams

Date: Circa 1840

Excellent antique condition, with no damage or losses. All seven topazes are original and the C-clasp is in good working order.

A beautiful and highly decorative example of early Victorian jewellery, notable for its sculptural construction, fine naturalistic detail and luminous antique foil-backed pink topazes.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early Victorian jewellery from the Romantic period between 1837 and 1860 frequently features nature-inspired motifs, including flowers, foliage, and scrolling vines. These designs were crafted in warm gold alloys and adorned with vibrant gemstones reflecting the naturalistic aesthetics of the era.

Foil-backing was a historical technique where thin metallic foil was placed behind a stone within a closed setting. This enhanced the gemstones colour intensity and brilliance under candlelight prior to the development of modern gemstone faceting.

Authentic early Victorian brooches generally feature closed-back gemstone settings, hand-chased foliage or scrollwork, and tube hinges with extended pin stems. They are often crafted in 15ct or 18ct gold, sometimes displaying regional touchmarks or lacking modern standard hallmarks.

An antique brooch can be worn on the lapel of a tailored jacket, secured at the collar of a buttoned shirt, or fastened to a silk scarf. It may also be attached to a ribbon as a choker necklace or pinned into hair styling for formal occasions.

Foil-backed jewellery must never be submerged in water or liquid cleaning solutions, as moisture entering the closed setting will oxidise and discolour the underlying foil. Preserve the piece by wiping gently with a dry microfibre cloth and storing it in a dry, padded container.
