Antique English 19th Century Tunbridge Ware Marquetry Jewellery Box by Edmund Nye, C.1870

19th century
Description

A beautifully preserved example of 19th century English Tunbridge ware, this elegant marquetry jewellery box showcases the exceptional craftsmanship for which Tunbridge Wells became renowned during the Victorian period.

The lid is exquisitely inlaid with a rectangular central panel featuring a striking stylised floral motif, framed by an intricate interwoven geometric border. The sides are equally impressive, decorated with a broad marquetry border incorporating a delicate garland of roses and mixed flowers, demonstrating the remarkable precision of traditional Tunbridge ware mosaic work.

Opening the box reveals its original blue paper lined interior, while the underside retains the original hand marbled paper finish. A particularly desirable feature is the rare original maker's paper label for Edmund Nye, manufacturer of Mount Ephraim and Parade, Tunbridge Wells, adding authenticity and collectability to this fine piece.

Presented in very good antique condition, this is an attractive example of Victorian decorative craftsmanship and would make a wonderful addition to any Tunbridge ware collection or antique interior.

After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tunbridge Ware is a form of decorative inlaid woodwork originating in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, which became prominent during the 18th and 19th centuries for small furnishings and collectables.

Craftsmen constructed these pieces by glueing long, thin wooden strips together into intricate geometric or floral blocks, which were sliced transversely and veneered onto woods like rosewood or walnut.

Authentic items feature natural, un-dyed wood mosaics creating fine tessellated patterns, smooth veneer integration, and occasionally maker labels from recognised workshops such as Edmund Nye or Thomas Barton.

Display the box on a sideboard, desk, or open shelf alongside contemporary stone or glass accents to highlight the intricate geometric pattern and warm timber finish.

Maintain the piece in a stable environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, and clean gently with a soft dry cloth without applying harsh chemical solvents.
