Antique Regency Mahogany Wine Cooler Cellarette Cabinet | Metal Lined Interior

19th century
Description

A rare Regency mahogany wine cooler (cellarette) cabinet, decorated with ebony stringing, turned columns, and standing on a plinth base.

The cabinet is designed as a single-door cabinet, opening to reveal a metal-lined interior fitted with two metal shelves. The metal lining to both the interior and the inside of the door was intended to help keep the contents cool, whether used for wine, spirits, ice, or other perishables. The door retains its original brass handle.

A practical and decorative piece, it can still be used today as a wine cooler, drinks cabinet, or occasional cupboard, whilst also making an attractive piece for the end of a hallway, dining room, or living room, with the top providing an ideal display surface for a lamp, sculpture, or other decorative object.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the eighteenth century and popularized during the Regency period, cellarettes were designed to store and cool wine bottles within dining rooms. Positioned near dining tables, they allowed hosts to keep beverages accessible and chilled using internal ice compartments before built-in refrigeration existed.

Cellarettes were typically constructed from high-grade hardwoods such as flame mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. Interiors were commonly lined with metals such as zinc or lead to contain ice and moisture, while exterior details often featured brass handles, escutcheons, and reeded or turned woodwork.

Authentic Regency pieces feature early nineteenth-century construction hallmarks, including hand-cut dovetail joints, original zinc or lead internal linings, fine flame mahogany veneers, and classical architectural motifs such as reeded columns or lion-mask handles.

In contemporary settings, a cellarette functions effectively as a compact drinks cabinet, side table, or lamp stand in living rooms, dining spaces, or home offices. Its flat wooden top provides space for lighting or decor while maintaining discreet internal storage.

Preserve the mahogany finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying natural beeswax polish occasionally along the wood grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources or dampness, and ensure any metal interior remains dry to prevent oxidisation.
