Description

Gunnar Johnsson (1917–2007)

**Swedish School**

A charming and whimsical portrait, likely painted in the early 1950s during Gunnar Johnsson's time in Spain, where the country's distinctive light and atmosphere became a lasting source of inspiration.

Gunnar Johnsson was renowned for his ability to convey movement and vitality through expressive, semi-abstract oil paintings. His work occupied a unique space between naturalism and abstraction, earning widespread critical acclaim and establishing him as one of Sweden's most promising post-war artists.

Following his debut exhibition at Gummesons Gallery in Stockholm in 1951, Swedish critics predicted a remarkable future. One reviewer described the exhibition as "a first-class surprise" and "a brilliant prelude for the young painter," while another praised Johnsson's distinctive style, noting that his "naturalistic weight and firmness bordering on the abstract sets him apart from most others."

Johnsson exhibited extensively throughout Sweden and internationally, particularly in Spain and France. His many solo exhibitions included Gummesons (1951), SDS Hallen (1952), Galerie Bleue (1965, 1966 and 1976), Maria Gallery (1968 and 1978), Engström Gallery (1979), and Händer, Malmö (1980). Today, his works are held in numerous European collections.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-century Swedish oil paintings from the post-war era typically feature simplified architectural forms, expressive impasto brushwork, and muted or cohesive colour palettes focused on atmosphere and form over strict realism.

Artists during this period primarily worked with oil paints applied directly onto stretched linen canvas or wooden board, frequently finished with simple painted or limed softwood frames.

Authentic works from this period often display period-correct canvas ageing, physical signatures or monograms near the lower margins, and original wooden framing alongside characteristic mid-century colour palettes.

Position the artwork as a focal point above a teak sideboard, fireplace mantel, or console table, pairing it with complementary clean-lined furniture and neutral walls to accent the paintings colour composition.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources. Clean gently using only a dry, soft brush to remove dust, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solvents.
