Rare 7'8" Turn-of-the-century Norwegian Wooden Skis & Bamboo Poles by L.h. Hagen & Co., Christiania – Circa 1900-1920

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptional, museum-quality pair of antique Norwegian wooden expedition skis, complete with their original matching bamboo and leather poles. Standing at an impressive 233cm (7ft 8in) tall, this set offers incredible scale and dramatic visual appeal, making it a perfect centerpiece for premium ski lodge decor, luxury chalet styling, or high-end retail windows.

Maker's Mark & Provenance: The underside tips of the skis feature a crisp, clear blind stamp reading "L.H. HAGEN & CO. CHRISTIANIA". L.H. Hagen was Norway's premier early winter-sports outfitter, famously chosen to supply specialized sledges and skis for Captain Scott’s legendary Antarctic Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). Because the stamp features the name "Christiania" (which officially changed to Oslo in 1925), this pair is firmly dated to the golden era of polar exploration between 1900 and 1924.

The front face bears bold gold historical monogram initials 'G DK'.

The pair retains the original period-correct metal and leather cable bindings, and are complete with matching original bamboo poles featuring authentic leather hand straps and classic circular snow baskets at the base.

Beautifully preserved, structurally sound, and displaying a magnificent rich patina. The wood shows honest historical wear, scuffs, and character from over a century of age.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century wooden skis served as essential winter transportation across Scandinavia before developing into recreational equipment. Manufacturers in Christiania, now Oslo, established standardized production methods during this period to craft durable timber skis for alpine and cross-country use.

Traditional skis were constructed from dense hardwoods such as ash, pine, or hickory, paired with forged iron hardware and leather strap bindings. Accompanying poles were made using lightweight bamboo or hazel shafts equipped with cane ring baskets and leather wrist straps.

Authentic period skis feature manufacturer stamps or impressed lettering near the waist, stamped metal binding plates, and original leather straps. Natural wear along the underside, patinated metal elements, and hand-fitted cane baskets on the poles further confirm original construction.

Antique skis can be mounted vertically or diagonally on expansive interior walls, positioned in entryways, or leaning in vacant corners. They provide architectural height, natural timber textures, and historic character to rustic, chalet, and country-style interiors.

Keep wooden skis and bamboo poles in climate-controlled indoor environments away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture. Apply natural waxes or timber conditioners periodically to preserve the wood finish and treat leather straps to prevent drying and cracking.
