ABOUT CHOPIN

Frédéric Chopin (1810–1849) was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic era. Celebrated as the "poet of the piano," he wrote almost exclusively for the instrument. Renowned for his poetic lyricism, he elevated forms like the nocturne, mazurka, and étude into cornerstones of the classical repertoire.

Key Details and LegacyThe "Poet of the Piano": Chopin transformed piano playing, focusing on deeply expressive, nuanced, and technically demanding music. He avoided large orchestral pieces and wrote primarily for solo keyboard.Early Life in Poland: Born in Zelazowa Wola, Poland, to a French father and a Polish mother, Chopin was a recognized child prodigy who performed for royalty at age eight. He left his homeland at age 20. Just weeks later, the November 1830 Uprising broke out, preventing his return and inspiring much of his intensely nationalistic music.Life in Paris: He settled in Paris, where he was highly sought after as a piano teacher. Rather than doing massive public tours, he preferred playing intimate shows in private aristocratic salons. He famously had a nearly decade-long relationship with the French author George Sand (Aurore Dudevant).Famous Works: His most enduring masterpieces include his Nocturnes, Etudes, Polonaises, Ballades, and the famous Funeral March.Tragic End: Plagued by poor health for most of his life, Chopin died of tuberculosis in Paris at just 39 years old.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This technique combines fluid ink washes for mid-tones, precise pen work for linear details, and opaque white gouache for highlights, usually executed on toned or coloured paper.

Artists utilised rag paper, iron gall or India ink, natural hair brushes, and lead white or zinc white gouache, often mounting finished works in wooden frames under protective glass.

Authentic works show characteristic signs of age such as foxing, paper yellowing, natural ink oxidisation, and hand-applied pencil or ink marks rather than modern dot-matrix printing patterns.

Pair framed drawings on paper alongside dark timber shelving, inside gallery wall arrangements, or resting on a mantelpiece or piano top to complement both contemporary and classic interiors.

Display works behind UV-filtering glass using acid-free mounting materials, keeping them in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
