Description

An ornate spelter and decorative glass Epergne dating from around the early part of the 20thC. It stands on a round spelter base with four little claw feet.

It measures 38.5cm in height, the base is approximately 16cm at the widest part, and the glass top measures 18.5cm in height with a 13.5cm in diameter open top.

The glass has a swirl design following the shape of the glass to the top with bursts of star shapes higher up. There is a surface scratch just under three of the flowers. It doesn't go through to the other side and is barely visible.

An epergne is an ornate table centrepiece designed to hold flowers, fruits, or sweetmeats, originating in the eighteenth century and remaining popular through the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Placed in the middle of a dining table, it served as both a practical display vessel and a status symbol during formal meals.

Antique epergnes were frequently constructed using sterling silver, electroplated nickel silver (EPNS), or cast spelter for the supporting framework. The removable inserts were typically made from blown, cut, fluted, or pressed glass in clear, cranberry, or opalescent varieties.

Authentic period pieces exhibit casting seams consistent with early production, natural patina or oxidisation on the spelter, and hand-blown or early moulded glass inserts that match the socket measurements precisely. Spelter is lighter than bronze and exhibits a dull greyish surface where worn.
