George III Period “chippendale” Chest On Chest C.1760

A particularly high quality George IIIsolid mahogany oak lined chest on chest retaining its original cast brass Chinese handles and escutcheons in a Chippendale pattern and retaining all of its original 18th century steel locks.

It is extremely rare and a real delight to find, to the base of one drawer in the original handwritten script, the price, date and cost of transport as:

May 29th 1760. Cost 6 pounds and 8 shillings.

With a price for the chest of 6 pounds and 6 shillings and the carriage costing 2 shillings.

The script in a literate educated hand.

This is almost certainly a London madepiece and, given its design and quality, from a top cabinet maker and the design of the cabinet, quality of the timbers and design of Chinese style handles are all in the manner of Thomas Chippendale Senior.
