Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, silver-plated fruit and cake baskets became prominent features of formal dining tables across Britain. The development of electroplating in the 1840s allowed manufacturers to produce highly decorated serveware with intricate relief patterns accessible to the expanding middle class.

These vessels were typically crafted from a base metal alloy, such as nickel silver or copper, which was shaped and stamped or chased with decorative relief work. A thin layer of pure silver was then fused to the surface via electrodeposition, with features like cast handles and pedestal feet soldered into place.

Authentic pieces generally display makers marks, electroplate hallmarks (such as EPNS for Electroplated Nickel Silver), or maker registry numbers stamped into the underside. Surface wear that subtly reveals the warmer base metal underneath on high points also indicates genuine age and electroplated construction.

A silver-plated basket functions effectively as a central focal point on a dining table, kitchen island, or sideboard. It can be displayed empty to showcase its internal relief carving or filled with fresh produce, moss, or decorative objects to contrast classic metalwork with organic textures.

Clean silver plate gently using warm water with a mild dishwashing detergent and a soft sponge to remove surface dirt. To remove tarnish, apply a non-abrasive specialist silver cream with a microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips or aggressive rubbing that could strip the thin silver layer.
