Fully Adjustable Oak Artist’s Studio Easel by C. Roberson & Co London

19th century
Description

A fine quality late 19th century oak artist’s studio easel by the renowned makers C. Roberson & Co. of London, retaining its original ceramic maker’s roundel to the front. Constructed in solid quarter-sawn oak, this substantial easel stands on a heavy H-shaped base fitted with the original cast iron castors, providing excellent stability whilst remaining easy to manoeuvre around the studio.

The easel is fully adjustable, featuring a rack-and-pinion mechanism operated by the original winding handle, allowing the canvas support to be raised and lowered smoothly. The central mast can be inclined to a variety of angles, while the adjustable upper clamp securely accommodates canvases of different heights, making it suitable for a wide range of painting and display requirements. The rear retains its original geared lifting mechanism and iron support braces, demonstrating the quality of its construction.

Displaying the expected paint splashes and signs of many years of studio use, the easel has developed a wonderful honest patina that reflects its working life.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A winding studio easel is a heavy-duty floor-standing frame designed for artists working on large-scale canvases, featuring a hand-crank mechanism to adjust height effortlessly.

Solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany were standard, combined with cast iron winding mechanisms, brass fittings, and heavy-duty castors for stability and mobility.

Look for maker stamps or brass plaques from historic artists colourmen, cast iron winding handles, pegged joinery, and authentic paint splatters or wear on the canvas shelf.

Studio easels make functional display stands for framed artwork, large mirrors, or architectural prints in living rooms, galleries, or home offices.

Apply clear beeswax polish periodically to nourish the timber, and ensure the mechanical iron winding gear is kept clean and lightly lubricated.
