Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinese export paintings on pith paper gained popularity during the Qing Dynasty in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, produced primarily in Canton for European travellers and merchants. These works served as visual souvenirs depicting Chinese culture, flora, fauna, and daily life.

These artworks were painted using watercolour and gouache pigments on thin sheets sliced from the inner pith of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant. The cellular structure of pith absorbs paint differently than standard paper, resulting in vibrant, slightly raised colours.

Authentic pith paintings feature a translucent, textured surface that responds to humidity changes, distinct hand-applied gouache pigments, and fine brushwork detail. Minor fractures or split lines in the pith surface are common signs of natural age.

Interior designers frequently display framed Chinese export art within gallery walls alongside contemporary pieces, or use them as focal points in reading nooks, entryways, and dining spaces to add historical contrast.

Paper and pith artworks should be displayed out of direct sunlight and kept away from areas with high moisture or fluctuating humidity. Utilizing UV-protective glass and acid-free mounting materials prevents fading and chemical degradation.
