Antique Hebdomas Patent 8-Day Pocket Watch

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Hebdomas Patent 8-day pocket watch.

The watch has an 8-day stem-winding movement which is working nicely… over a week, it gained around two minutes per day. The movement is covered by a large barrel which has details of the watch and also various dates and locations, presumably when and where medals were won.

The watch measures 47mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is sterling silver and there are hallmarks inside the case back for London (import mark), 1918, with a sponsor’s mark for George Stockwell. From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail. The front of the case is in good condition, there is some unevenness to the back.

The glass lens is in good condition.

The dial is signed Hebdomas patent, and has the visible balance. There are quite a few very faint hairlines to the dial, not immediately apparent to the naked eye.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Declaration

The Vintage Wrist Watch Company has dated this Hebdomas 8 Day Pocket Watch to the 1910s.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Hebdomas pocket watch is a Swiss keyless timepiece patented in the late 19th century, featuring a large mainspring barrel designed to run continuously for eight days on a single winding.

These timepieces commonly combine enamel dials with nickel, silver-plated, or sterling silver cases, featuring brass or gilt engraved balance bridges that display the exposed escapement.

Authentic models generally feature a visible exposed balance wheel at the base of the dial, specific dial text such as Hebdomas Patent or 8 Days, and official Swiss patent markings inside the case back.

These historical timepieces are typically displayed on specialized desktop watch stands, housed beneath glass dome cloches, or arranged in framed shadow boxes alongside other horological collectables.

Keep the timepiece stored in a dry, temperature-controlled environment away from magnetic fields, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
