Description

Superb 18th century Worcester porcelain junket dish with shaped rim and press moulded scallop shell and floral decoration. Painted with the Junket Dish Florals pattern. Further floral sprays are painted to the underside of the rim and a cell border runs in sections around the rim. Open crescent mark to the base, c.1770.

Reference: Branyan, French & Sandon, section I.E.35, classed as uncommon.

It measures 24.5cm (9 5/8") wide and 7.3cm (2 7/8") high. 

Condition is excellent with no damage, repair or restoration and minimal handling wear. There is a short firing line at the rim from manufacture. Beautiful on display, but also a lovely practical size for fruit, salads and desserts for those who wish to use, rather than just admire their collection.

A First Period Worcester junket dish is an eighteenth-century English ceramic vessel made between 1751 and 1783, during the tenure of founder Dr John Wall. These shallow, scalloped dishes were designed specifically for serving junket, a traditional curdled cream dessert.

First Period Worcester porcelain was produced using a soapstone-bearing soft-paste body, which made it highly resistant to thermal shock from hot liquids. The blue decorations were hand-painted or transfer-printed using underglaze cobalt oxide before the final glaze firing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit a slightly greenish or greyish tint when held up to a strong light source due to the soapstone composition. Glaze shrinkage around the foot rim, underglaze blue open crescent marks or workmans marks, and distinct shell or leaf moulding are common characteristics.

Display the dish on a plate stand atop a dark wood sideboard or open shelving unit to highlight the relief moulding and cobalt contrast. It can also serve as a central decorative accent on a dining table or console alongside contemporary glassware.
