Antique Victorian Solid Silver Salts/small Dishes with Fabulous Foliate Chasing - Barnards 1840.

19th century
For Sale by Artisan Antiques
Description

We are delighted to have acquired and offer this magnificent pair of foliate dishes/salt cellars made by Edward, Edward junior, John & William Barnard, London 1840.

The set presents a spectacular naturalistic design, drawing inspiration from nature's free-flowing, asymmetrical and enchanting beauty.

The dishes are ornate and crafted in the form of flared acanthus leaves with each section being meticulously hand-chased, then stippled on top to create a wonderful matte/contrasting appearance.

In spite of what could have been a very utilitarian and bland article, this pair is profusely decorated with such splendour, signifying the time and effort that would have gone into creating each piece whilst also suggesting the status of its owner.

Owing to their versatile form and being a pair, these salts not only offer a wonderful aesthetic in an interior setting but could be used practically in the modern day with some creative uses.

Whether it be for plenty of salt/pepper at a dinner party or as a rotating sauce/condiment selection for the dinner table, we believe such pieces present a versatile offering in addition to their splendour. Some further creative ideas may include: single sorbet servings, jewellery storage, an ashtray, and small confectionery servings.

Overall, an exemplary pair of artistic and decorative foliate dishes, perfect for elevating any interior dining setting or for discerning collectors wishing to add a distinguished set to their display.

A full set of English hallmarks is present on the side of each bowl.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian silver salt cellar is a small, open vessel crafted from sterling silver, designed to hold loose salt on a dining table before salt shakers became widespread in the late nineteenth century.

Antique salt dishes were typically constructed from solid sterling silver or silver plate, often featuring hand-chased, embossed, or cast ornamentation and sometimes lined with glass to prevent corrosion.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature official British hallmarks stamped into the metal, including the makers mark, purity mark, town mark, date letter, and the monarchs duty mark.

These small vessels can be displayed as part of a dining table centrepiece, used on a sideboard to hold small items of jewellery, or incorporated into a cabinet display of antique silverware.

Clean silver salts using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive cleaners, and rinse thoroughly after exposure to salt to prevent pitting and oxidisation.
