'diana Disarming Cupid' - Mezzotint Portrait Of Elizabeth Dashwood Duchess Of Manchester And Her Son George Montagu, By James Watson After Sir Joshua Reynolds.
£1,200 $1,619 €1,401
DIANA DISARMING CUPID'' - MEZZOTINT PORTRAIT OF ELIZABETH DASHWOOD DUCHESS OF MANCHESTER and HER SON GEORGE MONTAGU, BY JAMES WATSON AFTER SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS.
Large fine and impressive 18th century mezzotint portrait of The Duchess of Manchester wearing a crescent moon in her hair (a symbol of Diana). She is depicted leaning toward her sleeping son to steal his bow. The young boy (her son George Montagu) is depicted with wings, lying beside his quiver of arrows.
Reynolds borrowed this motif and pose for this composition from Francesco Albani’s Disarming of Cupid.
The original work was Reynolds''s first entry to the inaugural Royal Academy exhibition in 1769 and was intended to demonstrate how he believed aristocratic portraiture could be elevated through mythological allegory.
This mezzotint is in a fine state of conservation and is housed in a fine quality antique ''Hogarth'' style frame.
