Heritage, History & Craftsmanship

A highly unusual and wonderfully authentic British oak salt box dating to around 1700, made firmly in the primitive vernacular tradition. Crafted from solid oak with a deeply aged surface, it retains its original wrought iron hardware - including the hand‑cut nail securing the sliding cover.

Traces of original red paint remain across the surface, a rare and evocative survival that adds warmth, depth and a sense of lived history. Early domestic objects of this type are increasingly scarce, especially in such honest, well‑preserved condition.

A superb piece of early British rural furniture: sculptural in form, tactile in surface and rich in character.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A salt box is a utilitarian wall-mounted or tabletop wooden container designed to store salt near the hearth, where ambient warmth prevented moisture accumulation.

These vessels were crafted from native hardwoods such as oak, elm, or pine, often featuring hand-forged iron hinges, nails, and occasionally mineral pigment paint treatments.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, irregular thickness from hand-paring timber, hand-wrought iron hardware, and wear or salt-induced patination on interior surfaces.

Mount the box on a kitchen wall alongside period ceramics or place it within a hearth alcove to introduce historical texture to modern country settings.

Dust gently using a soft, dry cloth to protect surviving painted surfaces, apply natural beeswax sparingly to unpainted timber, and keep away from high humidity.
