Antique Early Oak Bible Box

18th century
Description

A charming early oak Bible box of traditional sloping form, handcrafted in solid oak and retaining a wonderful deep, rich colour. The sloping hinged lid opens to reveal a practical fitted interior comprising a series of pigeonholes above a spacious storage compartment, making it ideal for the safekeeping of documents, letters and treasured possessions. The box retains its original iron strap hinges together with the original iron lock plate to the front, all contributing to its authentic period character. Displaying attractive wear, a mellow colour and pleasing surface texture throughout, this is a genuine early country-made piece with all the individuality expected of handmade furniture from the period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally created in the 16th and 17th centuries, bible boxes were portable wooden chests designed to securely store expensive family bibles, legal deeds, and writing implements. Sloped examples served double duty as reading lecterns or writing surfaces.

Early bible boxes were constructed from solid native timbers, predominantly English oak, joined using hand-cut dovetails or mortise and tenon joints with wooden pegs. Hardware typically consisted of hand-forged wrought iron hinges and lockplates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of hand-tooling, such as pit-saw or adze marks, uneven plank thicknesses, and original iron fittings with natural oxidisation. The oak develops a deep, irregular patina over centuries that modern reproductions cannot easily replicate.

Place the box on a modern console table, sideboard, or executive office desk to serve as a textural focal point. It functions effectively as a stylish concealed storage solution for modern tablet computers, stationery, or personal keepsakes.

Preserve the timber by applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, rubbing gently along the grain. Keep iron hardware free from moisture to prevent active corrosion, and avoid placing the item near direct heat sources to prevent wood movement or splitting.
