Early Georgian George II Cuban Mahogany Tray Top Silver Table with Cabriole Legs

18th century
For Sale by Whites Antiques
Description

Fine early Georgian George II tray‑top silver table in rare Cuban mahogany, circa 1727–1760, with cabriole legs, slipper feet and a three‑sided drawer - a beautifully balanced, increasingly scarce example of early 18th‑century craftsmanship.

Why We Love This … Early Georgian tray‑top tables have a presence that later examples rarely achieve. This one feels particularly honest and well balanced — not over‑polished, but carefully looked after. The combination of crisp cabriole legs, rich surface colour, and subtle detailing makes it a genuinely attractive and highly usable piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century, a silver table is a light occasional table designed to hold tea equipment or display silverware, often featuring raised tray edges to prevent items from sliding off.

These tables were predominantly constructed from dense Cuban mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-carved cabriole legs, dovetail joints, and occasionally pull-out candle slides or brass escutcheons.

Authentic George II pieces display hand-planed timber, period-accurate dovetailing on drawer linings, natural patination, and hand-carved pad or claw-and-ball feet consistent with mid-18th-century craftsmanship.

Positioned as an occasional side table beside contemporary seating or within an alcove, it provides structural contrast when paired with modern textiles and soft lighting.

Maintain mahogany by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth, applying beeswax along the wood grain twice yearly, and keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or warping.
