We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Boulle furniture originates from 17th-century France, pioneered by cabinetmaker Andre-Charles Boulle, who perfected a technique of inlaying cut brass and tortoiseshell into wooden furniture. The style experienced major revivals during the 19th century, particularly under the reign of Napoleon III, when craftsmen produced elaborate ebonised cabinets featuring classical revival elements.

These cabinets are typically constructed from dense hardwoods finished with black ebonisation, inlaid with intricate sheets of engraved brass and natural tortoiseshell. High-quality gilt-bronze or brass mounts, known as ormolu, are applied to corners, borders, and aprons for added structural protection and embellishment.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-cut brass scrollwork inset flush into ebonised timber or tortoiseshell backings, often showing subtle oxidation or natural wear to the metalwork. Inspecting the cast gilt-bronze mounts reveals hand-chased details, heavy casting weight, and period-appropriate screw fixings on the interior.

An ebonised Boulle cabinet functions as a focal statement piece in formal entryways, dining rooms, or living spaces. Interior designers often contrast its detailed ornamentation against neutral walls, pairing it with contemporary artwork or minimalist lighting to balance historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Maintain stable humidity and temperature levels to prevent the wood frame from expanding and lifting the brass inlay. Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid alcohol-based cleaners or water on tortoiseshell, and use specialised non-abrasive wax pastes specifically formulated for antique veneered furniture.
