Georgian-era Silkwork/woolwork Embroidery, Likely Depicting The "Flight Into Egypt"
£260 $348 €305
This is a Georgian-era silkwork/woolwork embroidery, likely depicting the ''Flight into Egypt''.It features hand-stitched silk thread/wool on a silk ground, with some faces or backgrounds potentially painted. The artwork is housed in a traditional giltwood frame with an eglomisé (painted glass) mat border.
An embroidered ''Flight into Egypt'' typically depicts Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus fleeing Bethlehem. Often stitched as samplers or religious pictures, these antique works—such as 19th-century stumpwork or tent-stitch panels—depict Joseph leading a donkey while Mary cradles the child. The frame is a little dishevelled and has loss of gilding in places, but it is full of character and highly decorative.
These historical pieces draw inspiration from European prints. Some notable examples to explore for historical context or comparison include:17th-Century Stumpwork: Raised-work (stumpwork) panels depicting this biblical journey often feature dramatic textile textures and s...ilk grounds.Regency-Era Needlework: Common in the early 19th century, these feature wool and silk on painted backgrounds, sometimes showcasing charming, naive details of the donkey and surrounding wildlife
