Hawksworth, Eyre & Co

The mark H E & Co on a silver plate most frequently belongs to Hawksworth, Eyre & Co, a prominent British silversmith and electroplate manufacturer established in Sheffield in 1833. History & Identification Origins: The company was founded by Charles Hawksworth and John Eyre. They were well known for their high-quality Victorian and Edwardian electroplate, flatware, and hollowware. Hallmarks: They registered marks at the Sheffield and London Assay Offices. Their primary silverplate mark was often "HE & Co" (often framed within a quatrefoil or shaped shield). Timeline: The partnership was dissolved in 1869, but continued under the same name. They went into liquidation in the 1930s, and their dies were purchased by Ellis & Co

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century silver-plated candelabra often feature Classical Revival motifs, including fluted column stems, reeded scroll arms, and geometric or faceted stepped bases.

These items were typically constructed using electroplating methods, depositing a thin layer of fine silver onto a sturdy base metal core such as nickel silver or copper.

Authentic pieces usually display makers marks or stamps such as EPNS, possess weighted bases for stability, feature detachable nozzles, and show minor wear revealing the underlying base metal on raised points.

Place a pair symmetrically along a formal dining table, atop a sideboard, or over a mantelpiece to introduce vertical scale, balance, and metallic surface reflection.

Polish gently using a specialized non-abrasive silver foam or cream with a soft cotton cloth to remove oxidisation without wearing through the silver plating.
