Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Goncalo Alves is a dense, highly durable South American hardwood valued during the nineteenth century for its striking contrasting grain patterns and rich reddish-brown tone. Cabinetmakers frequently utilized this timber for fine furniture frames, carved accents, and veneered surfaces.

Nineteenth-century armchairs were commonly constructed with solid hardwood frames such as mahogany, rosewood, or Goncalo Alves. Interior upholstery utilized natural materials including horsehair padding, steel coil springs, jute webbing, and rich surface fabrics like velvet or silk damask.

Authentic period armchairs feature hand-carved joinery details, hand-turned or carved showwood frames, original castors, and period-correct timber species. Frame undersides often reveal hand-sawn timber elements, traditional webbed construction, and evidence of historic upholstery tacking.

Pairing antique armchairs with modern side tables creates a balanced contrast in contemporary living spaces. Positioning a pair opposite a modern sofa or within a reading corner allows the carved timber frames to serve as sculptural focal points.

Carved timber frames should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically with natural bees wax. Velvet upholstery requires delicate vacuuming using a soft brush attachment, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fibre degradation and colour fading.
