A tranquil painting of the old lock and Holy Trinity Church at Stratford upon Avon by Benjamin Williams Leader. A canal boat is depicted making its way through a lock gate, known as Lucy’s Locks. A figure can be seen watching on as two people on the boat help guide it safely through the lock. Rising above this scene, lies the unmistakeable silhouette of Holy Trinity Church, most famous for being where William Shakespeare was buried. Other members of his family including his wife Anne (née Hathaway) and daughter Susanna are also buried there. Lucy''s Locks dates from around 1664 and was part of a nearby system of weirs, sluices and dams which also included Lucy’s Mill, Lucy’s Mill Bridge and Lucy’s Weir. In 1959 the lock was filled in....
