Antique William IV Mahogany Sewing Box Stool / Work Table C.1840

19th century
Description

A charming antique William IV mahogany sewing box stool dating from around 1840, combining elegant design with practical storage. Raised on a finely turned central pedestal terminating in a substantial quadripartite base with turned bun feet, the stool displays the refined proportions and restrained elegance associated with the William IV period. The hinged upholstered seat lifts to reveal a useful storage compartment, originally intended for sewing implements and needlework, making it equally practical today for storing knitting, craft items or other household essentials. The seat has been professionally reupholstered by RD Goodchild in F4905-05 (Red/Green). It has been finished with traditional double piping, creating a crisp, tailored edge that reflects the quality of the craftsmanship and complements the elegant mahogany frame.

Condition: Very good antique condition. The mahogany frame is solid and sturdy with a rich, mellow patina developed over nearly two centuries. There are minor age-related surface marks together with a few historic shrinkage lines to the base, all stable and entirely commensurate with age. The upholstery is in excellent condition, having been professionally reupholstered by RD Goodchild.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in Britain between 1830 and 1837, a William IV sewing box stool is a dual-function piece featuring an upholstered seat that lifts to reveal storage for needlework materials, supported by turned pedestal bases.

These pieces are predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or rosewood, featuring hand-cut dovetailed jointing, turned timber pedestals, and traditional woven upholstery fabrics.

Authentic pieces exhibit distinctive design elements of the 1830s, including substantial turned central columns, concave quadripartite platform bases, turned bun feet, and heavy flame mahogany veneers.

This versatile piece functions effectively as a dressing table stool, an accent footrest beside an armchair, or concealed storage in a fireplace alcove within traditional or modern schemes.

Timber surfaces should be dusted with a microfibre cloth and treated periodically with beeswax polish, while fabric upholstery should be vacuumed gently with a soft brush attachment and kept away from direct sunlight.
