A “Hedley Dial” Miner’s and Surveyor’s compass by Davis & Son of Derby, circa 1875.

4 ½ inch silvered dial with two spirit levels.
 
Outer dial divided 0 – 360, Inner dial with cardinal points, N-E-S-W, divided into 90 degree quadrants, each divided10 – 80.
 
On a brass locking gimballed mount with 360° silvered bearing circle and folding sights.
 
Underside marked: MINg CLASS SURv 48
 
Revolving tripod mount with four levelling screws.
 
 
Width: 16.5 cm.
 
Depth: 29.5 cm.
 
Height folded: 11.5 cm.
 
Height unfolded: 23 cm.
