Georgian Nelson Commemorative Cup Bowl Rummer, "England Has Done Her Duty"

19th century
Description

This is a Georgian, English, engraved rummer glass commemorating Admiral Lord Nelson and dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1805.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ovoid-shaped bowl measuring 8 cm (3.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is decorated with a Hoho bird carrying a leaf frond flanked by the legend "England has done her duty" in script. The legend refers to Nelson's signal "England expects that every man will do his duty" before the Battle of Trafalgar. The bowl is otherwise plain. The bowl sits on a short plain stem and a slightly misshapen conical foot which measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter. The glass is 10.6 cm (4.2 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

English lead glass weighing in at 185 g. (~ 6 1/2 oz.).

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rummers are short-stemmed, large-bowled drinking vessels popular in Britain during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, often produced to commemorate historic figures or naval victories.

Georgian rummers were mouth-blown from lead glass, featuring hand-ground pontil marks, short waist stems, wide bucket or cup bowls, and wheel-engraved decoration.

Authentic period glassware typically exhibits hand-engraved detailing, subtle air bubbles or inclusions within the metal, a ground or polished pontil mark beneath the foot, and wear consistent with age on the underside.

Position glass rummers on a sideboard top, open shelf, or inside a glazed display cabinet where ambient light highlights the wheel-engraved inscriptions.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding hot water to prevent thermal shock, and dry immediately using a soft lint-free cloth.
