Pair of Gilt Finish Arm or Elbow Chairs Well Detailed Carvings

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

A pair of well detailed gilt arm or elbow chairs in generally good condition and solid to sit on. The age of these is a little hard to determine but we would guess early 1900s. The upholstery is very tidy and they have hardly been used since it was done for an event company that used them a props. They have been stored in their warehouse and to my knowledge have only been out twice since the upholstery. Seat height is 40 cms and the depth is 57.

They will fit into many locations and give some impact as the carvings are detailed and considerable. Tops of arms, the back, seat facings etc are all detailed. Gilt is used but highly serviceable. Happy to discuss, give us a call 01565 874075

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Giltwood seating from the Baroque and Baroque Revival periods features heavily carved timber frames coated in gold leaf or metallic finish. Characterised by high backs, scroll arms, and elaborate classical motifs, these pieces were designed to display status in formal reception rooms.

Traditional giltwood chairs are constructed from carved hardwoods such as beech or walnut, which are prepared with layers of gesso plaster. Gold leaf is applied over a clay bole base using water or oil gilding techniques, accompanied by woven damask or velvet upholstery.

Authentic antique giltwood chairs display natural surface wear, often revealing the underlying red or grey clay bole clay beneath the gold layer. Frame assembly using hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery and subtle variations in hand-carved detailing distinguish period examples from modern reproductions.

Positioning a pair of carved giltwood armchairs opposite a contemporary sofa creates a structured contrast between classical ornamentation and modern lines. Pairing them with neutral backdrop tones and minimal accessories allows the intricate wood carving and textile work to serve as visual focal points.

Clean giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry brush to remove dust without applying moisture or liquid chemicals, which can dissolve the water gilding and gesso layer. Maintaining stable indoor humidity levels prevents timber movement that causes flaking or cracking of the gilded surface.
