Description

A fine and rare Rockingham bone china coffee cup and saucer, c.1826–1830, decorated in the desirable pattern 743.

The cup is of bucket shape with a figure 7 handle, decorated with a deep claret ground and burnished gilt bands. The front panel is finely painted with a study of seashells and marine foliage, set within a gilt rectangular reserve.

This form and decoration are typical of Rockingham’s finest tea and coffee wares of the red griffin period, with rich ground colours, high-quality painting and elaborate gilding.

The cup bears the Yates, Leeds mark.

Cup: 7.5 cm high, 7.7 cm diameter

Saucer: 15 cm diameter

Condition

Excellent antique condition. No damage, no restoration and no glaze crazing. Only a couple of superficial scratches consistent with age. A very decorative and collectable example.
