17th Century Stained Fruitwood Child’s Lambing Chair C. 1680

Description

A wonderful early lambing chair made for a child or small person, ideal to sit down by the fire, or in an inglenook or cottage room with a beautiful linear simplicity and retaining all of its original timbers.

The seat with old wearand old worm tracks (long since dead), the substantial twin planked back with hand forged iron nail fixings and having developed a narrow shrinkage gap. Boarded back and sides to the seat and well shaped wings.

All original timbers with a brace added underneath the seat board – only visible when you turn the chair upside down and this appears to be a 19th century belt and braces addition and an oak strip at the top of the back, with lovely patina, which may be original or added early in the chairs life.

Very robust and usable, no movement in the joints, old shakes and cracks – all as old as the hills and completely stable – chips and small losses consistent with an early piece of vernacular working furniture.

Children would have helped on the farm and with lambing and the tall back and side wings were designed to keep out the chilly winds whilst waiting up in the wee small hours.
