Antique Vanity-bag, Qashqa'i Confederacy, Kashkuli Tayefeh, Fars Province, South-west Persia.

19th century
Description

The design on this finely knotted little chanteh reminds me of a slalom ski-run! But I'm pretty sure that this is not what the weaver had in mind when she made this bag. Whatever she is depicting here, the wool is soft and lustrous and is complete with its fine complementary weft-weave blue and ivory border, sitting above a row of chevron soumak lappits.

Made during the last quarter of the 19th century by probably the finest weavers within the Qashqa'i Confederation, the Kashkuli, the vanity-bag is complete with its plain-weave back in horizontal bands of red, blue and turquoise.

Size: 29 x 28cm (12" x 11").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique tribal vanity bag, historically crafted by nomadic weavers such as the Qashqai, is a small woven pouch originally designed to store personal grooming items, combs, or cosmetics during seasonal migrations.

These bags were traditionally woven using hand-spun sheep wool dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments, incorporating both flatweave and hand-knotted pile techniques for durability.

Authentic Qashqai pieces display fine wool foundations, saturated natural dyes, asymmetric knotting, and traditional geometric motifs such as chevrons, diamond medallions, or abstract tribal symbols.

Small tribal woven bags can be framed in custom shadow boxes, displayed as textural wall art, or mounted on stands atop consoles and bookshelves to add rich colour and historical interest to contemporary spaces.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent natural dyes from fading, vacuum gently without a rotary brush, and store with moth deterrents in a climate-controlled environment.
