Antique Vanity-bag, Koti Arab Tribes of Varamin, North Persia.

Description

The face of this 'chanteh' or vanity-bag is extremely, finely knotted in diagonal coloured bands and surrounded by an ivory border of small, stylized flowers.

The Varamin region is inhabited by a mixture of tribes such as Lors, Kurds, Afshars and Shahsevan as well as Arabs and according to Parviz Tanavoli in his book 'Rustic & Tribal Weaves from Varamin', an almost identical piece on page 78, he attributes to the Koti Arab tribes and made during the last quarter 19th century.

Tehran was chosen as the capital of Persia in 1795 by Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar and in order to be close to the Persian court, tribal khans and chieftains from all over Persia moved to the Varamin plains. Most Varamin Arabs migrated from Fars in the 17th century onwards on the orders of the Safavid, Afsharid and Qajar Shahs.

The two most powerful Arab tribes are the Jabareh and Sheibani with the Koti tribe being a tayefeh of the Sheibani. The Koti are known to have produced some of the finest weavings which can be observed in this tiny chanteh.

This rare bag is in very good condition with original lappits and ties and plain-weave back.
