Marine Oil Painting La Corbière Lighthouse, Jersey with Shipwreck

19th century
Description

Sarah Louisa Kilpack (1839–1909) c.1880 Oil on Board of La Corbière Lighthouse, Jersey with Shipwreck | Signed Victorian Marine Painting

Description

An exceptional Victorian oil on board by the renowned British marine painter Sarah Louisa Kilpack (1839–1909), depicting the iconic La Corbière Lighthouse on Jersey's dramatic granite coastline.

Painted circa 1880, only a few years after the lighthouse entered service, this atmospheric work captures the raw power of the Atlantic as waves crash against the rocks beneath a storm-filled sky. Kilpack's confident brushwork and harmonious palette of golden ochres, smoky greys, muted sea greens and cool blues create remarkable movement, light and atmosphere.

Adding narrative interest are the remains of a shipwreck scattered across the foreground. Broken timbers amongst the surf recall the many vessels lost on the notorious reefs before the lighthouse was completed in 1874. Rather than depicting a specific event, Kilpack evokes Jersey's rich maritime history, with the lighthouse standing as a powerful symbol of hope, safety and endurance.

There is age-related craquelure and scattered foxing. The later gilt frame displays wear consistent with age and handling.

Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the description and condition report.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century marine art focuses on ocean landscapes, coastal rock formations, weather phenomena, and seafaring vessels. The genre often emphasises the atmospheric tension between natural oceanic elements and human structures like lighthouses and ships.

Traditional picture frames from this era were constructed from carved timber, coated with layers of gesso and clay bole, and finished with gold leaf gilding to produce a rich reflective surface.

Authentic oil paintings typically exhibit age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, natural oxidisation on the wooden stretcher bars behind the canvas, and visible hand brushwork under raking light.

A maritime oil painting can serve as a focal point when hung against modern neutral walls, complementing timber furniture and brass metalwork in study or living spaces.

Dust the frame and canvas surface gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths which can strip gold leaf gilding and damage original oil varnish.
