Superb Quality Rare Pair of Late 18th Century French Directoire Style Walnut Open Armchairs

19th century
Description

A rare and superb quality pair of late 18thc (circa 1800) French Directoire style walnut open armchairs in the style of designs by Georges Jacob/Jacob Freres.

This pair of armchairs consist of a shaped back with turned rail to the top with carved scrolls to either side leading down to a panel with carved decoration and turned spindles below forming an elegant arcaded back.

The shaped and moulded arms with carved fleur-de-lis to the top supported by turned arm supports with brown leather seats (not original).

This leads down to a moulded bow shaped front seat rail with carved paterea to the top of turned and tapered front legs with outswept legs to the back.

The Directoire style 1789-1804 marked the transition between Louis XVI style and the Empire style, the Directoire style consisting of designs of elegance, simplicity and purity.

Georges Jacobs (1739-1814) was a Parisian furniture maker specialising in the making of chairs, in 1796 he founded a new furniture workshop called ‘Jacob Freres’ with his two sons.

Reference: similar examples to this design can be found in the books 'Le Style DIRECTOIRE' by Guillaume Janneau and 'Symbols of Power Napoleon and the Art of the Empire Style 1800-1815' - page 109 with an armchair by 'Jacob Freres'.

This pair of chairs are in very good condition for age with evidence of old restorations, are of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating between the Neoclassical and Empire periods in France, Directoire seating features simplified classical motifs, restrained carving, open arms, and architectural lines inspired by Greco-Roman design.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised native hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and beech, often paired with leather or woven fabric upholstery secured by brass studded trim.

Authentic pieces exhibit turned or square tapered front legs, slightly flared rear sabre legs, carved back splats with geometric or classical motifs, and traditional hand-cut joinery.

Position a pair opposite a modern sofa or frame a focal architectural point to create visual balance between contemporary minimalism and historical structure.

Apply a high-grade beeswax polish to the wooden framework periodically and treat the leather with a neutral leather conditioner while keeping the chairs away from direct heat sources.
