Antique Early Victorian Zebrawood & Rosewood Centre Table

19th century
Description

An early Victorian zebrawood and rosewood centre table, featuring a striking zebrawood top and legs, with a rosewood frieze.

Zebrawood is an exotic hardwood native to West Africa, principally found in countries including Cameroon and Gabon. It is prized for its distinctive striped grain, which gives the appearance of a zebra’s markings, making it one of the most decorative cabinet woods used during the Victorian period.

The shaped frieze is decorated with elegant scroll carving and suspended turned pendants, whilst the table is supported by ornate pierced lyre-shaped end supports, united by a spiral twist stretcher. It stands on scrolling splayed feet, completing the distinctive design.

A decorative and practical piece, equally suited for use as a centre table, console table, or behind a sofa.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early Victorian centre tables were prominent pieces of furniture designed to stand in the middle of a room or entryway. They typically feature heavy pedestal or trestle bases, rich exotic wood veneers such as rosewood or zebrawood, and detailed hand-carved ornamentation.

Craftsmen during the early Victorian era frequently utilised dark, heavily grained woods including mahogany, rosewood, walnut, and zebrawood. These timbers were often applied as high-figured veneers over solid wood substrates to accentuate natural grain patterns.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display distinctive grain contrast, natural age-related oxidisation in the finish, and hand-cut joinery underneath the tabletop or drawers. The weight of the timber and traditional hand-carved construction details also distinguish original items from modern reproductions.

A Victorian centre table can be positioned as a focal point in an entrance hall, used as a spacious writing desk in a home office, or styled behind a sofa in a living room. Combining dark figured timber with modern seating or lighting creates a balanced scheme.

Exotic wood veneers should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent fading, drying, and cracking. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional application of high-grade beeswax will preserve the timber moisture and polish.
