This scene is part of a series depicting the Seven Acts of Mercy, specifically the act of ''feeding the hungry'' based on the Gospel of Matthew (25:35): ''I was an Hungred, & Ye gave me Meat''. [1, 2]
Sebastiaan Vrancx (1573–1647) was a prominent Antwerp painter known for battle scenes and genre subjects. He frequently depicted the Works of Mercy, sometimes combining them all onto a single panel or creating a series of individual scenes.
The print features characteristic elements of Vrancx''s style, including architectural depth with classical columns and a pergola covered in greenery. The figures are dressed in period clothing, with an old man and others receiving food at the entrance of a substantial building, typical of his urban genre scenes.
This mezzotint is in a fine state of conservation and is housed in a quality ebonised frame with a sanded gilt slip.
