An onion bottle is a type of hand-blown glass vessel characterised by a squat, bulbous body and a short neck, commonly produced in Britain and Europe during the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries for storing liquids and apothecary concoctions.

These vessels were hand-blown using unrefined iron-rich sand, producing thick, dark green or olive-brown glass, and featured an indented kick-up base created by the glassmakers pontil rod.

Authentic pieces display asymmetrical hand-blown forms, pontil scars on a deep kick-up base, natural air bubbles or inclusions within the glass matrix, and signs of hand-applied gilt or painted labelling.
