Stunning Large-scale Mid 19th Century & Earlier Highly Decorative Stained Glass Triptych

19th century
Description

A stunning large-scale highly decorative mid 19th century and earlier stained glass triptych.

This wonderful stained glass triptych consists of three separate sections that form the overall ‘stained glass window’, each window consisting of various fragments of coloured glass including some early pieces as well as mid 19th century stained and etched glass with lead work, with possible repairs made in the Victorian period.

Each stained glass window has been framed within a light box using led lights to enable the light to be reflected through the glass without the need of natural light – therefore giving a source of decorative light and a stunning appearance.

The top section, of arched form, consists of various pieces of coloured glass to form a superbly decorative window with a leaf and berry design border, all within a moulded wooden frame.

The middle section, of rectangular form, consists of various pieces of coloured glass depicting the Ascension of Jesus as He ascends to Heaven the Apostles watch him below with a leaf and berry design border, all within a moulded wooden frame.

The lower section, of square form, again consisting of various pieces of coloured glass creating a stunning quatrefoil design to the centre and other deigns depicting the words ‘HE WAS PARTED FROM THEM AND CARRIED UP INTO HEAVEN’ to the top with a leaf and berry design border, all within a moulded wooden frame.

The separate stained glass panels can be removed from the boxes if required and also the three separate light boxes could be hung separately if required.

This triptych is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home etc. – this would make a stunning statement to any wall space.

All three boxes are in working order but before use would need to be checked and fitted by a qualified electrician by the purchaser.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival stained glass originated during the mid-19th century in Britain and Europe as artists re-embraced medieval architectural traditions and glassmaking techniques. These pieces feature rich colours, figurative religious storytelling, and pointed lancet arch designs characteristic of high Victorian church architecture.

19th-century panels were assembled using pot-metal glass coloured throughout its matrix, joined together by H-shaped strips of lead known as cames. Detailed figures, faces, and drapery were painted onto the glass using vitreous glass paint before being fired in a kiln to fuse permanently.

Authentic period glass exhibits subtle variations in thickness, hand-painted details with fine kiln-fired trace lines, silver stain highlights, and natural oxidisation or flexing on the lead cames. Modern reproductions typically lack painted vitreous shading and feature uniform, machine-made glass sheets.

Antique stained glass panels can be suspended inside modern window frames using discreet brass chains to allow natural light to filter through the glass. Alternatively, panels can be mounted inside custom wooden lightboxes with backlighting to serve as architectural feature wall art.

Clean stained glass gently using distilled water and soft microfiber cloths, avoiding harsh chemicals, ammonia, or abrasive cleansers that can damage painted surfaces. Ensure the surrounding lead structure remains supported, as old lead cames can bend under heavy structural loads over time.
