Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate was invented in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover and involved fusing layers of sterling silver onto a copper ingot before rolling it into sheets. It allowed churches and households to acquire objects with the appearance and durability of solid silver at a lower cost, remaining popular until electroplating was commercialised in the 1840s.

These items were crafted from a composite material consisting of a core layer of copper sandwiched between thin layers of sterling silver. The borders were often finished with struck silver wire or cast silver details to conceal the exposed copper edges.

Authentic pieces frequently show slight copper showing through areas of high wear, known as bleeding. Additionally, they typically feature turned-over silver edges, rub-in silver foil patches behind central engravings, and lack the standard electroplate maker marks post-1840.

Plates of this style can be displayed flat on a sideboard top, arranged vertically on wall brackets, or integrated into a styled tray setting within a dining or living area to showcase decorative metalwork.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and a specialized silver polish formulated for plated metal. Avoid abrasive cleansers or excessive rubbing, as this can wear down the thin outer layer of silver and expose the underlying copper core.
