Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Jacobean Revival and Victorian carved bookcases are distinguished by rich, dark wood finishes and intricate hand-carved motifs, including foliate trails, lunettes, and grotesque masks. Popularised in the nineteenth century, these pieces drew inspiration from seventeenth-century English woodwork to create substantial, ornate storage for domestic libraries.

These bookcases were typically constructed from solid European oak, utilizing mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-planed backboards. Decorative friezes and carved side stiles were applied or carved directly into the timber frame, resting on a heavy plinth base.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, such as uneven hand-cut saw marks on the rear panels, natural shrinkage around joints, and deep patination within the carved recesses. The weight of the solid oak frame and hand-chiseled detailing further distinguish original items from modern reproductions.

Pair a dark oak bookcase with modern muted walls to create striking visual contrast without overwhelming the room. Incorporate a balanced blend of ceramic vessels, stacked hardback books, and framed artwork alongside traditional volumes to soften the heavy timber aesthetic.

Dust regularly using a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth to remove debris from carved relief work. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and preserve the historic finish, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
