Cold-painted bronzes originated in Vienna, Austria, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Artisans cast figures in bronze and painted them after casting using layers of oil paints or enamel without firing them, resulting in highly detailed and realistic polychrome finishes.

These pieces are produced using the lost-wax bronze casting method. Once the raw metal sculpture cools and is hand-chased, multiple layers of cold oil-based paint or lacquer are applied directly onto the metal surface rather than using fired enamel.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy weight characteristic of solid bronze, exceptionally crisp casting details, and naturalistic surface wear. Look for historical foundry stamps such as the urn mark of Franz Xaver Bergmann or Austria markings, along with soft paint patina rather than modern shiny acrylic finishes.
