Victorian Walnut Serpentine Credenza with Marquetry & Ormolu by Maison Gagneau

19th century
Description

An antique Victorian walnut serpentine credenza, richly decorated with ormolu mounts and geometric parquetry marquetry, executed in the Louis XVI style. The bronze mounts are by Maison Gagneau of Paris, several stamped “GA” to the reverse.

The shaped serpentine front is centred by an impressive marquetry panel, forming the main focal point of the piece, framed within a rectangular ormolu moulding. The frieze is further decorated with geometric parquetry inlay, incorporating a central floral motif, and is mounted with four ormolu masks of Hercules wearing the Nemean lion skin.

To either side are glazed doors, each opening to reveal a burgundy fabric-lined interior, while the central section also opens to a shelved storage space. The cabinet is further enhanced with arabesque ormolu mounts.

A pair of new keys has been cut, ensuring that each door is fully functional and can be securely closed.

A well-proportioned and decorative credenza, suitable for use in a dining room, hallway, or living space.

Maison Gagneau

Maison Gagneau was a Parisian bronzier and lighting manufacturer founded in 1800. The firm became highly regarded during the 19th century for its decorative bronzes and lighting, and is known to have worked with celebrated ceramicist Théodore Deck.

The business was originally based at 25 rue d’Enghien before moving to 115 rue Lafayette. Maison Gagneau exhibited at major French industrial and international exhibitions throughout the 19th century and was sufficiently well regarded that the firm was represented on the jury for the Bronzes category at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian serpentine credenzas are characterised by an undulating front profile, typically crafted with wood veneers such as walnut or rosewood. Popularised in the nineteenth century, these cabinets served both functional storage and display purposes in formal reception rooms.

These cabinets often combine timber frames topped with decorative wood veneers, marquetry or parquetry inlays, and cast brass or bronze ormolu fittings. Glass panels, frequently curved, were integrated alongside fabric-lined interiors to highlight display items.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, original lock mechanisms, and natural oxidisation on underlying wooden surfaces. Cast metal mounts usually feature securing screws or pins consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing methods.

Position the credenza against a focal wall in a dining room, hallway, or living space to serve as a low-profile anchor piece. Balance the detailed woodwork by pairing it with simple contemporary wall art or structured tabletop ceramics.

Maintain the piece by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a wax polish specifically formulated for antique timber. Avoid harsh metal cleaners on the ormolu mounts to prevent removing original gilt finishes or patination.
