Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French gilt mirrors are recognised by their solid wood frames layered with plaster gesso, detailed with hand-carved classical motifs, and finished with gold leaf gilding. They often feature refined foliate ornament, beaded borders, and proportions tailored for grand townhouses and chateaux.

Craftsmen constructed these frames from carved timber bases, applying multiple thin layers of gesso (a mixture of chalk and animal glue adhesive). Detailed mouldings were pressed or hand-carved into the wet gesso before delicate sheets of thin gold leaf were applied using water gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age such as fine hair-line cracking (craquelure) in the gesso, subtle wear to the gilding revealing red or clay bole underneath, original timber backboards, and slight distortion or light spotting in mercury glass plates.

Positioning a large gilded mirror opposite a window maximizes natural light within a room. Placing it above a fireplace mantel or leaning it against a neutral plaster wall creates an elegant contrast against contemporary minimalist furnishings.

Dust the ornate mouldings gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent chipping fragile gesso. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes on the gilded surface, as moisture can dissolve historic gesso and destroy gold leaf.
