Portrait Painting of a Gentleman by George Frederick Harris (1855–1936)
Welsh School, signed oil on canvas
A late 19th-century portrait of a gentleman, oil on canvas, by George Frederick Harris (1855–1936), signed lower left. The sitter is shown half-length, formally dressed, with a dark jacket, patterned cravat, and pin, against a dark green-brown ground.
The canvas is stamped to the reverse Harris & Sons, Portrait Painters, Merthyr Tydfil and Prepared by Winsor & Newton, 38 Rathbone Place, London – a canvas supplier active at that address until the 1890s. The stretcher also bears a chalk inscription: G. F. Harris 1881?, likely a reference to the artist and approximate date of the work.
George Frederick Harris was a portrait and landscape painter active in South Wales, where he ran a portrait studio in Merthyr Tydfil. His work is recorded in Welsh regional art circles and is of growing historical interest. He was also the grandfather of the actor Rex Harrison.
