Gents Seiko Sportsmatic Weekdater Automatic Wrist Watch

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents Seiko Sportsmatic Weekdater automatic wrist watch.

The watch has a 21-jewel automatic movement, calibre 6619A, which is working nicely.

The watch measures 36.5mm diameter excluding the lugs. The case is stainless steel and it is in good condition, just minor surface marks, and some scratching around the edge of the case back. A past owner has scratched their name into the back of the watch. The case back has the model reference 6619-8010 and the codes date the watch back to 1968.

The lens is in lovely condition.

The signed dial is in its original finish with original hands, centre seconds hand and day / date display… wind the hands forwards to set the day, push the winder in to set the date. Handsome cross hair detail.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the 1960s, the Seiko Sportsmatic line was designed as an accessible, high-performance automatic watch for everyday wear. The Weekdater models brought the day-date complication into mainstream popularity, establishing key design standards for Japanese horology.

Mid-century wristwatches typically feature stainless steel or chrome-plated cases, acrylic crystals, and mechanical movements with synthetic rubies serving as jewel bearings. Straps were traditionally made from genuine leather or fitted with stainless steel bracelets.

Authentic pieces feature consistent typography on the dial, precise logo application, and matching reference numbers stamped on the case back and movement. Checking the movement caliber number against official production archives provides confirmation of age and model identity.

When not worn, mechanical wristwatches are often styled on leather watch rolls, wooden valet trays, or presented under glass cloches on a bedside table or dressing table to highlight their mechanical design.

Keep mechanical watches away from strong magnetic fields and water sources, as vintage seals degrade over time. Regular professional servicing every three to five years ensures the mechanical movement remains lubricated and accurate.
