Vieux Paris Biscuit Porcelain Sculptural Group with Floral Garlands, C.1850-1870

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A fine Vieux Paris biscuit porcelain sculptural group produced during the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The composition shows three figures adorning a classical urn with elaborate floral swags, combining the elegance of French Romanticism with the refinement of Parisian decorative porcelain.

The exceptional quality of the hand-modelled decoration immediately distinguishes this piece. Individually formed flowers, petals and foliage were applied by hand using the traditional pastillage technique, a labour-intensive process requiring considerable skill.

The biscuit surface creates a soft marble-like effect and beautifully preserves the delicate modelling throughout the composition. The underside bears an incised letter M, probably a workshop or assembly mark.

Produced within the Vieux Paris tradition, the group belongs to the rich network of independent Parisian porcelain makers who supplied luxury decorative objects to fashionable nineteenth-century interiors.

Collectors particularly value these large decorative biscuit groups for their sculptural quality, technical complexity and strong visual impact.

Dimensions: Height 17 cm; Width 13.5 cm; Depth 12 cm; Weight 882 g.

Condition: Basket at the rear of the composition has losses and chipped edges, as shown in the photographs. Minor chips to some flowers. A firing crack is present inside the urn bowl. Otherwise excellent antique condition.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Vieux Paris, or Old Paris porcelain, refers to porcelain produced by independent artisan workshops in Paris from the late 18th century through the late 19th century. Biscuit porcelain is unglazed porcelain that has been fired once, resulting in a matte surface texture similar to carved marble.

These sculptures were crafted by pouring liquid kaolin clay slip into multi-part plaster moulds. The separate components, including figures and decorative floral garlands, were assembled and hand-finished prior to firing in a kiln without applying a glaze.

Authentic pieces exhibit sharp, defined moulding, a smooth matte texture, and expected surface wear along the unglazed underside. Many Vieux Paris workshops did not mark their wares, so identification relies on period artistic style and construction methods.

Place the sculpture on a dark wood sideboard or marble mantlepiece to create visual contrast against the matte white surface. Displaying the piece alongside contemporary minimalist accents allows the sculptural details to stand out.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry brush to clean the intricate folds and crevices. Avoid water and chemical solutions, as unglazed porcelain is porous and can absorb moisture or oils, causing irreversible discolouration.
