Edward Priestley (1820–1880) – Oil On Canvas, Horses Running In A Landscape With Steam Locomotive
£1,400 $1,897 €1,649
A charming and unusual Victorian oil on canvas by the English painter Edward Priestley (1820–1880).
The composition depicts three powerful horses galloping across an open pasture, beautifully juxtaposed against an early steam locomotive and carriage passing in the distant background. Priestley masterfully captures a poignant moment in British history: the direct contrast between traditional rural life and the unstoppable momentum of the Industrial Revolution. The rhythmic movement of the horses is cleverly echoed by the trailing steam of the train beyond.
Known for his picturesque rural scenes and sporting subjects, Priestley’s works are held in notable public collections, including the National Trust (Sunnycroft) and the Warrington Museum & Art Gallery.
This particular piece stands out due to its cross-collectible appeal. While it is a classic example of 19th-century British provincial equestrian art, the rare inclusion of early railway iconography adds an exceptional layer ...of historical interest, making it equally attractive to enthusiasts of industrial history and railway memorabilia.
The painting is signed to the lower right and is presented in an attractive gilt frame. The warm palette, atmospheric landscape and unusual railway detail make this a particularly decorative and engaging example of the artist''s work.
Signed: Lower right
Dimensions: 90cm x 65cm x 5cm
Presented in good antique condition with age-related surface wear and craquelure consistent with a Victorian oil painting. Please refer to photographs for a detailed assessment of condition. There is a tiny historic repair to the reverse to stabilise a small puncture located in the top right of the tall tree. The repair is completely secure and the painting is sound, stable and ready to hang.
A highly decorative and increasingly scarce Victorian sporting landscape combining equestrian and railway interest.
