Pair Miniature Silver Continental Figures

1900 - 1920
Description

A pair of novelty miniature silver figures on square bases, perhaps made for a Dolls House. They are traditionally dressed figures, one with a bucket and the other with a basket on her back.

They are good quality and well made. There are initials on both bases but they are not fully hallmarked and have been tested as .800 grade silver so are likely continental. They weigh approximately 41g.

They are in good condition. There are no major damages and they display well. There are some faint surface marks and minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. They have been gently cleaned and polished and are ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Miniature silver figures were decorative collectables produced across Continental Europe, particularly in Germany and the Netherlands, from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries. These detailed genre figures depicted rural workers, street vendors, and everyday life scenes.

These miniatures were typically cast using the lost-wax process or assembled from individually cast components, such as tools, baskets, or limbs, soldered together. They were crafted using Continental silver fineness standards, such as 800, 835, or 925 parts per thousand.

Authentic pieces generally bear hallmark stamps indicating silver purity, town marks, or makers marks, frequently struck on the base or lower edge. Examining the weight, casting seams, and surface patina helps distinguish genuine silver from plated alloy reproductions.

Miniature silver figurines can be displayed inside glass cloches, curated within a glazed cabinet, or placed on a bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes. They also serve as focused decorative accents when arranged on a sideboard tray.

Dust the figures regularly using a soft brush to prevent dust build-up in intricate crevices. When polishing, use a delicate silver polishing cloth or a mild silver foam, avoiding harsh abrasive cleaners that could remove deliberate oxidisation or finer surface detail.
