Victorian Sikes Hydrometer

19th century
Description

A good example of a Victorian Hydrometer, used to measure and regulate the alcohol content in drinks. The set comes with its original brass float and 8 graduated weights. It also comes with its original thermometer and proof measuring ruler.

The float is stamped "BUSS 33 Hatton Garden London. SIKES 38244". Each of the weights are also stamped with the same number. The ruler and the thermometer are both stamped "BUSS". "with their weight and '4773'. The thermometer is marked "Hughes & Son. 59 Fenchurch St. London".

The whole set comes in its original mahogany box with fitted lined interior. The box has a lovely rich patina and there is an inset plaque in the centre of the lid which reads "Sikes' Hydrometer. BUSS 33 Hatton Garden London. Maker to the Revenue of the United Kingdom"

It is a good example of a high quality set and it is in good condition for its age. Unfortunately the end of the thermometer is broken but there are no other major damages. There are signs of age and use, some tarnishing and minor marks but nothing detrimental. The box has a few marks and old stains but the interior is clean and tidy and it displays well.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Sikes hydrometer is a precision measuring instrument introduced in the early nineteenth century to determine the alcoholic strength of spirits for customs and excise taxation.

These sets were constructed using lacquered brass for the float and slotted weights, glass and mercury for the thermometer, and polished mahogany lined with velvet for the protective case.

Authentic examples feature maker signatures stamped on the scale or case, matching serial numbers engraved across the brass float and individual weights, and precise mathematical graduations.

The open mahogany case can be placed on a study desk, a library bookshelf, or inside a glazed cabinet to add historical interest and scientific character to a room.

Store the set in a dry place away from direct heat sources, dust the components gently with a soft dry cloth, and apply a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax to protect the wooden exterior.
